Prospective Students

Our range of courses

Our German-language bachelor’s programmes offer a broad and comprehensive basic education in engineering within a time-frame of 6 semesters. Graduates acquire the degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). Particularly in the field of engineering, it makes sense to enrol in a master's programme, the successful completion of which opens up further career opportunities at home and abroad. In the Ing. master’s programmes, students acquire the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Master of Education (M.Ed.) after 4 semesters. All master's programmes are structured in such a way that they can be started in both the winter and summer semesters.

The language of instruction in our master’s programmes is German. The only exception is the Biofabrication course and Battery Materials and Technology.

Frequently asked questions

Are you interested in studying at our faculty? Below we have compiled the most frequently asked questions, and answered them for you. Our programme advisors (bachelor’s/master’s), the head of the internship office, and PULS will be happy to answer any questions not listed here.

Why study at the University of Bayreuth?Hide

Tight-knit academic community

The University of Bayreuth is not one of the huge universities. Indeed, a tight-knit academic community of researchers, teachers, and students has developed at our faculty. People know each other personally and talk to each other.

Small groups

Ing. teaches the contents of its courses to students in groups that are as small as possible. This strengthens the personal atmosphere typical of engineering and contributes to a productive and positive learning environment in which the special needs of each individual student can be addressed.

Generalist and interdisciplinary

A broad engineering education is just as important in later professional life as in-depth knowledge in one’s chosen special fields. Ing. offers a broad spectrum of training and complements it with selected courses from other faculties.

Practical relevance and internationality

A high degree of practical relevance during an engineer’s studies is a vital component of an excellent education. For this reason, the courses of study offered by Ing. include an industrial internship, some of which can even be completed before beginning one’s studies. In addition, students in Bayreuth are given the opportunity to prepare for the international job market during their studies, whether through a stay abroad or by learning a foreign language at the University's language centre.

Social commitment

Many students are looking for an opportunity to balance their studies with involvement of some sort. At Ing., some possibilities are participation in the student representatives council, or in the student racing team Elefant Racing. Yet even beyond the Faculty of Engineering Science, the possibilities of social commitment are almost unlimited, as various student initiatives testify year after year.

Bayreuth campus atmosphere

One reason for choosing Ing. at Bayreuth University is already apparent in the aerial photograph: short walking distances from one lecture to the next, green spaces to have a minute’s break during the day, and the typical atmosphere of a campus university, which is seldom found in Germany.

Training at a high level

Engineers enjoy high-quality and interdisciplinary training. In order to complete this successfully, above all problem-solving thinking and a high degree of independence are required.

Going to the limit

The study of engineering is one of the most challenging disciplines one can choose. Conversely, however, this means that engineering graduates have proven not only their technical skills, but also character traits such as stamina and resilience.

Learning for life

The basic knowledge of an engineer and the methodical approach never grow old. Trained engineers can continue to keep up with the rapid technical development taking place right now, and with whatever the future brings. You yourself play a decisive role in shaping this progress.

Future chances

Highly qualified engineers will continue to be sought after in the future, especially in industry. Ideally, engaging in the wide-ranging basic training is followed up by a specialisation matching the individual interests and strengths of the student.

Gateway to the world

The German engineering degree is highly respected worldwide. More and more students are taking advantage of the special opportunity to gain early access to work opportunities around the globe, for example through language courses, international specialist literature, and stays abroad.

What does the professional field of an engineer look like?Hide

In the experience of our graduates, on could say the areas of application are very broad. Automobile manufacturers and renewable energy plant constructors are just two kinds of future employers. In addition, there are job opportunities in research institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft or the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft as well as at universities. In principle, all the fields of work of a mechanical engineer can be covered by the training.

Are there places in halls of residence in Bayreuth?Hide

You will find information on this on the pages of the Studentenwerk Oberfranken (Upper Franconian Association of Student Services).

Where and when can I register?Hide

Registration takes place online. All information on enrolment and current dates can be found on the pages of the Student Administration Office.

What is in the curriculum exactly?Hide

You can find the detailed course contents of the individual study programmes here.

What would my timetable look like?Hide

All courses are listed in the course catalogue. Here you can select the relevant courses, for example at the Faculty of Engineering Science, and include them in your individual timetable.

When is the best time to plan a preparatory industrial internship?Hide

Students are strongly encouraged to complete 6 weeks of the internship prior to commencing study. The respective hosting institution will provide certification of the type of internship and its duration. Please note our internship regulations and contact the internship office if necessary.

How many weeks of internship are set in my course of studies?Hide

See the pages of the internship office to find out

  • how many weeks of internship you have to complete for a particular course of study,
  • and how internship accreditation works.
With whom can I have my academic achievements accredited?Hide

The examination board is responsible for classifying your previous achievements. Forms for seeking accreditation can be found here.

Can I work as a graduate assistant (HiWi)?Hide

The individual research groups at Ing. and non-university research institutes, such as Fraunhofer, offer you a variety of opportunities to work as a HiWi. This is highly recommended, as it gives you early insights into current research and enables you to gain skills that are in great demand in industry. Variable monthly working hours and flexible working hours ensure that HiWi duties will slot into any timetable. Many HiWi positions are advertised on the notice board. If you are interested in a HiWi activity, you can also contact the respective research groups or institutes directly.

Will travel costs be covered if I take part in the aptitude test?Hide

No, expenses for travel, accommodation, and meals incurred in connection with participation in the selection procedure cannot be covered.

What are the admission requirements for the Master's programmes?Hide

The admission requirements for the individual Master's programmes are set out in the current examination regulations. Proof of the industrial internship must be provided within the first year.
